Most systems do not fail loudly. They fail quietly, and by the time anyone notices, the failure has been shipping for months.

That is the thread through everything I write here.

I spent two decades typesetting scientific and technical books, and I am named in the front matter of more than seventy of them. That work teaches you one thing very precisely: most of what a document means is carried by how it is arranged, and the arrangement is invisible until you try to reproduce it mechanically. A PDF keeps where the glyphs sit and throws away what they meant. OCR does not fail noisily, it fails toward plausibility. An API can accept a write, store it, confirm it back to you, and ignore it entirely.

Now I build AI systems that read documents, mostly for people making acquisition decisions, on one rule: every claim traces back to its source, and anything that cannot be verified against the document is discarded rather than smoothed over. Cite the source or cut the claim.

The same principles turn up in a different domain, which is why I wrote The Off-Grid Mindset, a DRM-free handbook about reducing dependence on fragile infrastructure. Energy, water, food and information systems, and the same four ideas underneath all of them: redundancy, simplicity, visibility, control.
